Exotification
I think exotification is part of it. I remember when I had long hair, I felt exotified and got conscious about it. I do think both romance and exoticness are paths to some state of cultural awareness unless you're born into it. I've seen 14 year olds get attacked online for not "knowing" and grown adults who have time to finally explore their culture after some life event. We're all on different paths. I we need all of it. It's the romantic things that get the masses into some of the academic aspects. It's unreasonable to expect people to get into PHD level stuff like it's it's also unreasonable for someone to go to a remote place in the Philippines to set foot on land and talk to elders so they can make a tshirt. There's no social or economic structure for that.
