What was your first job, and what did it teach you about authority?
My first real job where I had to pay taxes was at Macy's. I worked in the girls' juniors (women's juniors) department and was in charge of keeping the stock floor organized—making sure items were put away, folded, and helping customers. I worked with an all‑female staff, so I was kind of the odd person out. What it taught me about authority was that when the floor got busy, I just had to take charge: none of the other stuff mattered; I needed to take care of the customers, and the rest could wait. That's what I learned about delegation and focusing on what is important.
